The Alchemist

The Alchemist tells the mystical story of Santiago, a young Andalusian shepherd who dreams of discovering a hidden treasure near the Egyptian pyramids. Believing that his recurring dream is a prophecy, Santiago embarks on a journey across Spain and into the deserts of North Africa. Along the way, he encounters various people—a king, a crystal merchant, an Englishman, and finally, an alchemist—each of whom teaches him profound lessons about life, destiny, and the importance of following one’s dreams.

At its heart, the novel is an allegory about listening to one’s heart, recognizing the signs placed along life’s path, and pursuing a “Personal Legend,” or true calling. Coelho weaves together themes of spirituality, fate, and self-discovery, encouraging readers to believe in the transformative power of dreams and perseverance.
